Odeo Flare wins HISWA innovation award

The Odeo Flare has won the 2012 HISWA Innovation Award at the opening ceremony of the HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show.

Launched in November last year at METS and its most recent version just coming on to the market this year, the Odeo Flare fought off three other finalists to secure the win. The seven industry professionals which made up the HISWA jury first nominated products before selecting the finalists and giving them a chance to present their individual devices.

The Odeo Flare is an arguably safer and more efficient alternative to the traditional pyrotechnic flare. The device will last for up to five hours when continually used and longer when turned on and off intermittently. This is compared to traditional flares that normally burn for approximately 30 seconds before distinguishing. Its new features from recent remodeling also include enhanced safety due to its use of battery powered lasers in place of dangerous explosives.



The Odeo Flare's new version is equipped with a full hemisphere rotating laser light output, which the HISWA jury were 'particularly impressed with.' The laser used in the Odeo Flare conforms to EN 60825-1 regulations and is Class 3R, meaning that it is not dangerous to a rescue helicopter pilot or the user’s vision should they briefly be exposed to the light.

The award was presented to Bojan Michiels van Kessenich, director of Odeo Flare’s Dutch distributor, Bomarine.

Bojan said: “We are delighted that the importance of the Odeo Flare has been recognised through this innovation award. It is a crucial safety device and the acknowledgement from HISWA highlights its potential as a lifesaving piece of equipment.”
