Dovaston and Nautilus host MLC seminar for captains and crew

Recruitment agency Dovaston Crew and maritime union Nautilus International will be hosting a two-day course on the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) in Palma from 5-6 May, 2014, in Palma.

Flag states who first ratified the Convention will now have been implementing the regulations for over six months, yet a number of ongoing complaints has led to Dovaston Crew and Nautilus International believing there is a need for better education on the Convention.

"Whilst most yachts are managed extremely well, there are, unfortunately, as The Crew Report has documented, still many examples of crew being treated unfairly or being stranded without pay. It is these inequalities that the MLC regulations aim to remove. Captains will be responsible for ensuring that their boat is compliant … [and] to help captains, senior officers and management companies who may be unfamiliar with the process, [we] are hosting a two-day MLC course in Palma," commented a spokesperson for Dovaston Crew.

The course will take place at the Mood Beach Club and the tutors are International Labour Organization (ILO)-accredited representatives with yacht-specific experience. "The course objective is implementation of MLC from the perspective of a non-certified ship, and will include debate about deficiencies and issues post-MLC. The course will help crew understand their rights, navigate through a complex subject and dispel the many myths that have arisen around yachts and their inclusion in the regulations," the spokesperson added.

The course costs 310 euros for officers and 210 for crew, but for Nautilus International members is free. Included in the cost is a copy of the MLC handbook and a certificate of training, with lunch and refreshments over the two days. Those wishing to see an agenda for the event should contact the Dovaston Crew team.
