David Reams grew up in San Diego and learned at an early age to sail. His boating family enjoyed fishing, dinghy racing and participating in Southern California and Mexico offshore sailing races.
David holds a USCG 1600 ton US/ 3000 ton international ticket and has commanded vessels ranging from small harbor tugs to a square topsail schooner and various private motor yachts on both the west and east coasts of North America.
After fifteen years at sea he moved ashore into yacht management with Camper and Nicholson Yachts where he became the Director of US operations and Yacht Management based in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Seven years later he was recruited to join Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s team at Vulcan Inc. in Seattle where he became the Sr. Director of Yacht Operations. It is in this capacity that he recommended the purchase and outfitting of R/V Petrel to act as Mr. Allen’s platform for marine archaeology and exploration. Since the deployment of Petrel in 2016, the vessel and its expedition crew have successfully located and surveyed several iconic WWII vessels including the USS Indianapolis, USS Lexington, USS Ward, USS Juneau and nearly a dozen Japanese vessels in the South Pacific, Philippine Sea and the Coral Sea.
