Piracy Worldwide

I decided to start this topic (even if I'm the only one posting) because it impacts everyone in the maritime industry in one way or another. I encourage everyone to also read the Synforum topic "To the Indian Ocean and Asia via the Suez Canal".

I'll try to post information and current events regarding piracy for your reading enjoyment. I'm also asking that anyone with input on the topic, whether it's experiences or opinions, please post them. Thanks everyone!

National Geographic has a very informative article regarding piracy in the Straits of Malacca. You can find it here.

Todd.  Thank you for posting that link to the National Geographic article.  It is an outstanding piece and I  highly encourage all mariners in the yachting industry to read it.

 Mark,
No problem. Hopefully we'll be able to get some comments from around the industry on this topic.

Here's an update on the crew being held by Somali pirates (including the involvement by the US Navy).

Somali pirates free the crew of the Japanese tanker. Read more about this here.

Todd, thanks for keeping all of us readers updated.  I went to your latest link.  Here is the most important part of that article:
"Correspondents say Somali coastal waters are now considered to be among the most hazardous in the world. With no effective government, pirates are able to operate largely unchecked."

With all that in mind, are there any Captains out there who have a concern passing through Somali waters?  Are there any Captains who are changing their plans based on pirate activity in that area?
