Having talked to different management companies trying to sell their service to me or to the owners of the boat I was on at the time. MY advice to all owners and Captains is...No NO NO! I have worked with many management companies over the years and have seen very little of value in their services and very little in support for the vessel from them no matter the level of service contracted for. As to how do they justify themselves ... I can see no justification for their existence just another cash cow and license to steel by people how usually know absolutely Nada about either running a yacht or even management itself period.  Is there a chance to get them out of the biz. Well I doubt it as in all successful industries the parasites will gather.
I hope this answers your question mark
"I see that the corruption factor has seeped into the equation here but my initial question was what do they do and how do they justify them selfs. "

Sounds like you guys are leaning against the bar and putting the world to right?

Just a small point however, most if not all management  company's are run by ex captains in fact  most commercial shipping operations world wide are run by ex captains, who else has  the practical hands on operational management experience?

Who's round is it?

It is good we have established from a well seasoned experienced veteran Captain the truth behind why Management companies exist.
Could I propose that Captains who have a management company work for reduced salary ? To pay for the offset.
But lets me honest what happens is the crew as a whole work for less to pay for the management company because the Captain has not got the management skills for the vessel. Which goes back to my very first questions why do they exist and what do they do.
I like many crew and Captains have had there lifes messed with by management companies thats what they do ......step in between the Captain and crew and take the cream.
In doing so undermind the Captains authority and making a wedge of lack of trust between Captain and owner that they to quote Tork "bottom feeders" live off.
Apart from driving the boat all decisions taken from the Captian so they can line there pockets as out lined earlier in this forum.
I see theres no response from management companies who are reading this forum intensly .....but then there wouldnt be would there !!!!

One would nearly start to think that the question is no question, but an opinion that needed spreading and some of us readers follow very happily. Is it not so that we need to look very well and differenciate? Not all captains are bad and not all captains are good. That accounts for management too. One of you had a point bringing the subject up that some big management companies just try to take on as many yachts as possible, forgetting that every yacht brings a certain work load. If anything, I would say that this is the biggest problem and that is not very different from the way some crew and captains are doing their job for the money. I am (un)lucky enough to be able to look back quite a couple of years and I sometimes think; Where are those people that used to love the trade, love boats and who are in the trade because are very professional, but passionate about this very special world? In my view every one part of our, sometimes very busy, industry has reason to exsist, as long as money is not the main driving force.

To use an already well used phrase in this discussion: food for thought?
