| mdrewelow Feb 23 2008 | Hi. Well put. Personally I have experience on all sides. Working as a couple as mate and chef, working as a couple as Captain and Stew, and now running CrewHeadHunter and dealing close with client requests. I believe in hiring couples. Its simple for the reasons stated in the previous post. Captain Mark DrewelowCrewHeadHunter

| expedition Mar 20 2008 | Like said before, there's good and bad couples like you have good and bad crew. It's not a 'couple' issue. But if possible, we'd prefer to hire couples.

Your topic is specifically about the difficulty experienced by couples to be co-hired while my reply is just something to think about. You sound like a very competent team, any boat would be lucky to employ you. Although I have never hired yacht crew my background is in hotels & management so understand where you are coming from- all of you. As a veteran(old)yachtie I have enjoyed long-term positions on several yachts and experienced a fair spectrum of crew dynamics. Being a couple has distinct advantages for the yacht such as teamwork, emotional support and reliability, all things that have been mentioned. From my own experience, as a single crewmember it can be downright lonely sometimes when the couples are doing things and you are the "odd sock". This is especially true on smaller yachts with 4 or 5 crew. I was fortunate on my last boat to be included in the activities of the captain & his wife. This did not make me overly popular with the other crew as I was treated like a spy at times but it is what kept me on board for 4 years. Companionship and kindness go a long way to making a yacht a less confined space and ultimately will help keep good crew. I can absolutely understand couples wanting to continue their careers together and am sorry to hear that such qualified & experienced crew as yourselves are being passed over for that reason. When you do find that job however, remember to make room for us "odd socks". Thanks. Edited by yachtchef65 - 20 March | ||

| davosurfs Apr 2 2008 | hello all, As a memeber of a couple on a small boat i can agree with almost everybodies point but i do think there is one thing to add. It took my partner and myself along time as nebie crew to find a job together, we have been with our owner for 2.5 years now and for the foreseeable future. I honestly think that as couples looking for work we have to be a little more patient when waiting for the correct oppurtunity. Unfortunately there just aren't the double vacancies that we are looking for whether it is engineer + Chief stewie or just deckie +stewie. As a result all the positive comments above are relevant to captains when a double vacancy is avaiable. Couples value their positions when working together!! | ||
