Winter refits underway
Before the refit yards closed their doors for Christmas, SuperyachtNews.com got the lowdown on current and latest projects across Europe.…
Christmas offers a more relaxed pace of business for many in the industry, but in the refit business, it’s merely the calm before the storm of refit work on yachts being primed for their next seasons.
SuperyachtNews.com has got the lowdown on the latest and ongoing refit projects across Europe, with significant projects reported in the Mediterranean, UK and Holland.
In Malta, Melita Marine Group has reported large contracts won, completed and a full book of pending refit work stretching to May 2012.
The latest is 70m Lurssen motoryacht, Martha Ann, who begins her refit at Palumbo Malta Superyachts. The four month project will see the complete outfitting of a cabin, engineering works and an overall paintjob.

Melita has also recently completed work on 95m Oceanco, Indian Empress. Situated near to the arguably more prolific Southern French and Spanish yards, Melita retains a healthy business rate owing to simple ethics. Director of the facility, Pierre Balzan underlined this, saying, “We specialise in being attentive to detail. We have the right pricing and we operate within peoples’ budgets; that’s why we get the business, [and] many are repeat clients.” Indeed Martha Ann is in for the second time and according to her Captain, Zak Matten she “will be back next year... the workmanship has been excellent and on time…as a captain it has been a pleasure."
Elsewhere in the Mediterranean, numerous projects are ongoing in the South of France, which saw the first ever Superyacht Refit and Repair Networking (SYRREN)
event held in Marseille this year. At that event, we reported an irregular marketplace, with either the same number of yachts continuing to use the region's refit facilities but demanding less work per yacht, or conversely less yachts coming in for refit.
However, key yards have reported busy, ongoing projects with Composite Works reporting refits on 71m Kogo, Sarasfa, 43.9m Marlena and 73m Queen K. And at International Technic Marine, preparations are being made for three big refit projects including two 70-80m yachts and a large sailing yacht. Monaco Marine has several projects on the go, with more major ones expected for the new year. Current projects are 44m Blue Vision, tank work for 51m RS Eden and 39m Pavati and various work for 42m Oxygen.
In Holland, the Sea Alliance Group has reported a significant success for the company and a sign that it’s not only yards that are upscaling. Its new contract for 27m Jongert yacht, Vivid is the largest refit project for Sea Alliance to date and will be carried out at the Jongert yard in Holland. It’s owner is an ‘enthusiastic world traveller’ who has traveled the globe with Vivid over the past five years.

Equally intrepid and an indicator of the vogue for Arctic exploration, her next trip after refit completion in April 2012 is to remote regions of Norway as well as an expedition to the Antarctic. The refit, as would be expected, is comprehensive. It includes exterior paintwork, a new teak deck, a full refit of the rigging, main engine and thrusters and renewing of all navigation and communication systems as well as a complete Lloyd's survey.

Lastly, in the UK, two large yachts at Pendennis are undergoing refits. Although under wraps, owing to confidentiality agreements, we can report good progress on 53m Perini Navi, Jasali II, due for completion in February, and the company’s largest refit project to date Dona Amélia (72m).
