Pendennis signs new classic sailing yacht

The new yacht marks the second time that Pendennis has collaborated with Dutch studio Hoek Design…

Just a few weeks after the delivery of S/Y Vijonara, British shipyard Pendennis has announced that a second custom sailing yacht, designed by Hoek Design studio has been signed. At a time where the British superyacht sailing market has been in a state of decline, this new contract marks an important development for both the shipyard and the wider sailing yacht market, which currently stands at 32 units under construction globally.

Designed within Pendennis’ Truly Classic range, this new 39m sailing yacht marks the second time that the British shipyard has collaborated with Dutch studio Hoek Design. Although details of the project remain confidential, is has been confirmed that the renowned Dutch studio will be responsible for both the yachts interior and naval architecture, much like S/Y Vijonara.

“We are proud to be involved in this project for a repeat client who previously owned a smaller yacht in the Truly Classic range,” says Andre Hoek, founder of Hoek Design. “The great experience we had from working with Pendennis on S/Y Vijonara has definitely had an influence in the decision to build again with the shipyard."

In the last 20 years, there has been a total of 451 sailing yachts delivered, of which just 12.4 per cent have been delivered in the last five years. As it currently stands, annual delivery figure expectations are far lower than they were prior to 2012, the year that represents the beginning of market’s declining delivery figures. However, 2018 may prove to be a resurgent year with 16 sailing yachts due for delivery if they all remain on schedule.

The British sailing yacht market, in which Pendennis has played a pivotal role, has delivered between one and four deliveries per annum within this period. Now, the British 30m-plus sailing yacht fleet stands at a total of 75 sailing yachts, of which Pendennis has contributed by 17.3 per cent during the course of its 30-year history.

“We are extremely pleased to be partnering again with the Hoek Design team and MCM as the owner’s representative,” says Pendennis managing director, Mike Carr. “Pendennis has continually invested in both its facilities and skills base over the last 30 years, enabling the company to grow into a global contender. Signing such a prestigious contract in this, our milestone year is a true testament to that. We are very proud to welcome this project into the Pendennis superyacht fleet.”
