Picchiotti's Project 'Vitruvius' makes waves in Italy

The Superyacht Group's chairman, Martin H Redmayne was in attendance at the Picchiotti yard in La Spezia for the arrival of Project 'Vitruvius'. The 73m hull is the largest to be built by the Picchiotti brand, the motoryacht arm of the Perini Navi Group.…

Having just returned from a tour of the Perini Navi Group’s 73m hull, C.2189, it is clear that they are moving into the motor yacht market proper. Having received hugely positive market reactions and awards for earlier projects, M/Y Exuma C and M/Y Galileo G, the sleek 50m versions have now been superseded by a vast 73m version of Briand’s efficient and energy conscious project.

At just under 1800GT, this is the largest Perini Group product, built under their motor yacht brand Picchiotti and marks a clear move into the congested landscape of large motor yacht builders. However there are two key things to consider with this project, with over half a million engineering, construction and paint man-hours already completed in their Yildiz yard in Turkey, and the interior contract being shared equally across Metrica and List, this will be a new build project that will enjoy a very clean completion period of some 16 months. This was evident when walking around their vast pristine sheds in La Spezia yesterday. It is clear that the perfecting of the hot work and manual engineering being executed in Tuzla is likely to allow the yard to deliver motor yachts and sailing yachts without the typical neighbouring metal / dust pollution or even noise too.

It will be interesting to watch the progress of this project, scheduled for delivery next year, but more interesting will be the reaction of the brokers and clients to this intelligent motoryacht player. Not only are they seriously proving their capabilities, but if you consider their successes in the sailing yacht market, where the brand DNA flows through from their management into their loyal client base, they could develop a product relationship where you remain part of a very unique brand family.

Both Exuma C and Galileo G have both disappeared off over the horizons into Pacific waters for exploring and voyages of discovery, for brand new yachts to undertake these types of journeys in their warranty years is a good sign for Picchiotti and Perini.

With an exciting sailing order book at Perini and their investments into Picchiotti motor yachts paying off with their first steps into the market, it will be interesting if more buyers will follow this lead. While there are many options to build big motor yachts, the Perini team have a very different chemistry from their sailing yacht background and we will see what reaction the Vitruvius formula creates.
