Hakvoort at near capacity with new 63m superyacht contract

Hakvoort has signed a contract to begin construction on its largest ever superyacht, 63.3m Zeus. The Diana Yacht designed superyacht will be delivered to her owner in Spring 2017.

Moran Yacht and Ship brokered the deal for the vessel, which will feature exterior styling by René van der Velden and a Sinot Yacht Design interior. At 63.3m the vessel will stretch the shipyard’s capacity of 65m to its limit.

Van der Velden, a friend of the owner, spoke of his desire for a ‘modern classic with a difference’:

“He was very keen that the yacht should not be a repeat of anything else that is currently afloat but something genuinely fresh and bold.

“The owner admires a type of styling called streamlining, which was especially popular in the 1930s and 40s. A streamliner is a vehicle or vessel given a specific shape that reduces air resistance: Examples include the famous ferry Kalakala and the record-breaking car Bluebird. This is the first time streamlining has been so clearly integrated into the design of a superyacht.”

A crucial part of the layout brief was the location of the tenders. “The owner has a lot of experience and knows how difficult large tenders can be to launch,” Van der Velden continues. “Seeking a very practical solution we chose to place two nine-metre tenders on the main deck. As this eats into a lot of prime real estate, we have skipped the traditional saloon, dedicating the main deck to the owner’s quarters, galley and captain’s cabin. This has freed space on the deck above for pure socialising.”

Notable design features include a sky lounge on the upper deck that opens to create a vast outdoor zone, an external gymnasium on the bridge deck and a beach club equipped with sauna. She is powered by twin Caterpillar 3512C engines producing a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 12.5 knots.

According to the shipyard’s bookkeeper, who spoke to SuperyachtNews.com this project, along with the recently signed 61m Project Golden Age, means the shipyard will be working at capacity for the foreseeable future.

Commenting on his company's most recent collaboration with Hakvoort, Moran's Chris Callahan said:

"As far as Project Zeus goes, it is obviously great news for both Moran Yacht & Ship and the Hakvoort Shipyard. We have done a number of projects with them in the past including, most recently, the 61m Project Golden Age which is scheduled to be launched in 2015. Their experience, dedication to craftsmanship and openness to work closely with us to deliver higher quality vessels to our clients cannot be matched.

"Our new construction team will stay on as the technical consultants and project managers to oversee the project and we look forward to another smooth construction process. Our mission is to deliver a better boat to our client, and Hakvoort can do just that."
