Construction is underway at Columbus Yachts on the new 65m Classic superyacht, the third in the custom Classic Collection.
The keel was laid on 20 February, in the Palumbo S.p.A. yard in Naples, in a simple ceremony.
Designed by Sergio Cutolo with naval architecture also by Sergio Cutolo’s studio Hydro Tec, the motoryacht (hull number C04) is Columbus’ largest under construction.
Built in steel and aluminium, she will be powered by twin engines giving a top speed of 16.5 knots and a cruising speed of 15.5 knots with a range of 5,000 miles at 13 knots.
At 1,850 GT with a beam of 12.8m, the 65m Custom Classic can accommodate 12 guests in four staterooms, one full-beam VIP and the rear-facing owner’s suite on the upper deck with its own private deck-space. She can house up to 18 crew.
The yard has introduced an artistic, but also highly practical, way of monitoring the progress of the 65m as well as all the yachts in build at Columbus.
This is the high performance fisheye camera, installed in each shed to track progress of build. The cameras have ultra wide-angle lenses spanning 180 degree angles creating a panoramic image. The intention is to keep owners updated on a day to day basis how their yacht is looking, but also to create ultimately a ‘memento’ of the process, with each image contributing to a time lapse video.
“While the individual pictures are not particularly exciting, the resulting video is remarkable since it captures the evolution of each yacht as if by magic,” said Pino Palumbo, General Manager of the superyacht division at Columbus Yachts.
Features of the 65m design include elegant and streamlined exterior lines which blend with spacious, airy interiors. Volumes are generous with ample headroom. Flexible deck-space provides several options for entertaining and outdoor living, including a large Jacuzzi and the bridge deck, which doubles as a helipad.
Other notable features include zero speed stabilisers, a cinema and a large spa with direct access to the beach club. All decks can be reached by a guest elevator and the yacht carries three tenders.
Delivery of the 65m is scheduled for 2015.
