SuperyachtNews.com's 12 Days of Christmas
By Rebecca Dark
With a percentage of owners looking for more adventurous cruising options than the usually trodden path of the Mediterranean, 2013 saw a push of these destinations to the superyacht market.
Charter company 37 South launched a new website in order to promote chartering in the South Pacific, providing local destination focused information for charter guests. Although 37 South are not the first destination website, they believe they are the only platform focusing solely on the South Pacific, which Fleur Tomlinson, charter specialist at 37 South said, “there is very little reliable information [on the South Pacific] out there.”
When the cruising season in the Pacific starting in April, many superyachts that had been in New Zealand or Australia for refit work were available to charter in the region including 58.2m Trinity build Unbridled and Fitzroy’s 2012 new build Ohana.
With the opening of the summer charter season SuperyachtNews.com spoke to four charter brokers and own owner to ask their opinion of the best ‘off the beaten track’ charter spots that more adventurous owners may want to pursue: French Polynesia, South Pacific (chosen by Cristabel Nye, charter broker at Camper & Nicholsons International); Stockholm, Baltic Sea (chosen by Rory Trahair of Edmiston); Antarctica (chosen by owner and captain of Sherakhan, Jan Verkerk); Indonesia, South Pacific (Stephanie Archer, charter manager at Ocean Independence); and The Cyclades, Greece (chosen by Marie Molls, charter manager at Burgess).
New Zealand was given further promotion during the Monaco Yacht Show as Tourism New Zealand, Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and Asia Pacific Superyachts hosted a Kiwi breakfast to highlight the cruising destinations around the country, rather than just a destination for refit: from subtropical beaches to fjords, New Zealand offers charters a variety of cruising grounds for the more adventurous owner and it needs to “showcase itself as a destination for cruising/chartering…[to] ensure we’re not just seen as refit port!” emphasised Jeanette Tobin, Asia Pacific Superyachts, prior to the show.
With these ‘out of the way’ destinations becoming more prevalent the strategic partnership struck between EYOS Expeditions Ltd and Triton Submarines in October offers owners and charters a further benefit in their yachting experience. The partnership allows for the companies to work together to allow guests to not only visit relatively unchartered areas by also explore up to 1,000m below the surface. "Combining the world's foremost provider of superyacht expeditions with the world's most sophisticated and advanced personal submarines is a natural fit," explained EYOS partner Rob McCallum when SuperyachtNews.com spoke to him in October. "Together, we can offer some true, once-in-a-lifetime experiences in areas that were virtually inaccessible to yachts only a few years ago."
As the regular cruising ground continue to become more crowded, these destinations are in a prime position to promote themselves as yacthing hubs, and with a lot of marina development taking place, the face of cruising in 2014 could start to really change.
