The show [season] must go on
By Rory Jackson
With the Monaco Yacht Show firmly in the rear-view mirror there is hardly time for the industry to catch its breath, let-a-lone rest on its laurels. From the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, the industry will soon move en-masse to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS).
With United States citizens continuing to be the central protagonists of the reinvigoration of the superyacht market, it is now more important than ever that FLIBS consolidates its position as a key marketplace for the industry, and builds on the reinvigoration the show experienced in 2014.
The confidence that the superyacht market once had in the guaranteed Euro-Asian billions of the Russian power players has now dwindled in light of the Crimean conflict and the resultant poor performance of the Russian financial markets. But contrastingly, US purchasing power continues to remain defiant.
Confidence in the US market is echoed by James Brewer of Derecktor, the local Floridian shipyard that specialises in superyacht refit. “We will continue our efforts to promote the South Florida marine industry, an industry that added eight billion dollars to the US economy in 2014, in addition to furthering our goals as a builder constructing unique yachts.”
Much has been made of Monaco’s pre-eminence as a networking event, a far cry from its traditional platform as a shop floor for the rich and the famous; with ample space to grow, and ample wealthy individuals to stimulate this growth, is now the time for Fort Lauderdale to flex its industrial muscle?
For the time being, FLIBS will operate as it always has. But behind the scenes there is plenty of optimism and anticipation about what lies ahead. And this is only bolstered by the confirmed attendance of the European yachtbuilding giants - the Lürssens, the Feadships and the Oceancos – who will all turn out in force in the hope of catching the early worm.
“The US brokerage market is stronger and buyers are willing to spend money,” explains Mike Busacca, Fraser Yachts’ chief operating officer and commercial director USA. “Last year we sold four yachts after FLIBS. We expect to have a great client attendance at this years show and to produce some more sales.”
At the time of writing the largest superyacht on show at FLIBS 2015 is the Espen Oeino designed, Lurssen built, 75.4m Northern Star. She will be on sale for an asking price of €99,950,00 with Moran Yacht and Ship and looking for a new owner that appreciates the same stately grandeur that was the penchant of her previous proprietor.
Icon Yacht’s 62.5m Meridian will also be on show and on sale for €57,000,000 with YachtZoo. She boasts exterior stylings by the renowned Redman Whiteley Dixon and interior design by the equally renowned Christiano Gatto. In 2013 Meridian was subject to a large scale conversion of her forward lounge on the main deck, resulting in the creation of a second master suite.
In comparison to the relatively classic interiors of Northern Star and Meridian, Oceanco’s 59m Helios showcases the neutral tones and shapes associated with more modern yachts – surprising considering she is the oldest of the three. At €39,000,000 and 14 years old, Helios has retained her value well, a reflection of her quality, and is now ready for the next part of her journey. Helios is on sale with Edmiston & Company.
