Francis entertains at SYDW
The fourth instalment of Meet the Designer saw Martin Francis, a man who requires no introduction, fielding questions from an enthusiastic audience and sharing information about his most famous projects.
Revealing hitherto unseen images of Echo, taken recently to celebrate her 25th anniversary, Francis shared his love of the unique design and why she remains one of his favourite projects. “If you look at my peers and even those who have worked for me, they’ve done maybe five or 10 times the amount of yachts I’ve done. And maybe it’s because I’m not great at self promotion or something!” Francis joked with the audience.
With decades of experience in the industry behind him, Francis is no stranger to change and the evolution of the market place. Inspiration drives change and can come from anywhere, as do the clients and the work, he shared.
One member of the audience threw up a regulatory question and Francis expressed his dislike, a feeling shared by many other designers. “So many regulations in the industry are prescriptive, especially when compared with the commercial industry. Unfortunately the yacht industry hasn’t addressed the fact that there are different risks involved.”
Always well received, this occasion was no different. Francis delivered the honest and often funny truths behind yacht design and his experience with the industry.
