'Marie' wins the 2015 Superyacht Cup

Day two of the Palma Superyacht Cup started with some strong wind and the promise of a competitive day on the water. As the fleet started the race towards the first mark, however, the race was abandoned due to a misplaced course marker and the yachts returned to the start line. Racing commenced again with the committee opting for a shorter course.

In Class A the Vitters-built Marie won again, while Kiboko Dos took line honours in Class B, and newly-built Maegan secured a victory in Class C. SuperyachtNews.com was on board Gaia, whose owner, Kristoffer Melinder, was enjoying the spirit of the Cup.

On board Gaia.

“I think the regatta is great and I love sailing in the Palma bay,” he said. “We came last year and enjoyed it a lot because it is a slightly more competitive event than some of the other regattas we participate in. Cruising on Gaia is fantastic but when we come here we can do proper sailing. Also this regatta is very inspiring; you see boats like Inoui and Win Win overtaking us and it gets me thinking about what we could do next.”

Win Win

Marie went into the final day of racing with a lead of two firsts in Class A, sitting a comfortable three points above regatta veteran P2. In Class B things were particularly exciting, with both Odin and Inouï sharing four points, just one point ahead of the previous day's winner Kiboko Dos. In Class C it was Maegan who had two points over Clan VIII and Blue Too.

Day three downwind leg

The race committee opted for a tactically interesting 27.5nm course, which made for some dramatic racing, and saw Perseus3 unfortunately retire from the race due to technical issues, as did P2 who ran over its kite during the drop. In Class A it was Marie who kept her class win from the previous days, Class B saw Win Win take the lead and Clan VIII triumphed in Class C.

Prizegiving back on the dock awarded Marie as Class A winners, as well as overall regatta champions, Inoui as Class B winners and Maegan as Class C winners. Find the full results of the regatta here.
