Asia's 'bread and butter' is smaller end of the market, says Bart Kimman
Northrop & Johnsons' managing director, Bart Kimman, who has attended the show every year since it's inception in 2005, spoke to Maarten Janssen about his operations out of Hong Kong, Singapore and Phuket.
"We have a fully fledged charter team in Thailand where we think most of the charter activity is based and gradually with more and more larger yachts in Asia, and more and more larger yachts owned by local people rather than visiting yachts," Kimman explained they are starting a management company to handle these larger yachts.
He clarified that "This show really shows superyachts, there are quite a few of them so you really get an impression about what superyacht world is, but if you look around the superyachts there are probably 100 smaller yachts. He added, "The bread and butter business is definitely the smaller end of the market, and the top end is beginning, but it's a very small number, still," Kimman explained.
Commenting on the charter market, Kimman explained, "Funnily enough, Asians charter in the Mediterranean and most people that charter the bigger yachts in Asia are Americans."
He concluded that "The investment is in people and infrastructure in Asia and I think most big Asian companies are doing that."
