Doing it for the girls!
The 2014 edition of the Antigua Charter Yacht Show has reached its midpoint and SuperyachtNews.com sat down with Fiona Maureso, recently appointed president of MYBA and charter broker at Northrop and Johnson, for an update on the work of the association and her view of the show.
Being the first female and charter broker MYBA president, Maureso explained that she is keen to make a real difference in her new role. "There is a real opportunity here to take MYBA in a different direction and put my own stamp on it," she said.
Maureso added that she is prioritising two main missions for the association. "Firstly, I think there is a perception that as an industry we are too fragmented," she said. "We need to all work together to change legislation that affects us. If we all speak with one voice, we are more likely to be listened to."
According to Maureso, MYBA is also trying to work more closely with other associations in order to work towards fiscal harmonisation in the EU, not on VAT rates but on procedures.
"Secondly, there a lot of people with MYBA membership who aren't active and the majority of the association is over the age of 45. I feel we need to engage more with the younger generation and so I want to make MYBA more inclusive."
In line with Maureso's new mission to bring the industry closer together, MYBA has also recently struck up a strong allegiance with the PYA after recognising that both associations are so heavily intertwined.
With regards to this year's show Maureso believes that it is quieter than in previous years, due to fewer brokers and some last minute yacht cancellations. "For me, this summer was the best I'd had since 2006 in terms of bookings," she explains. "But I don't think it was across the board. A lot of European brokers have not made the show this year because they can't justify the expense following a quiet season."
