Anticipation builds in Antigua
The opening of the 2014 Antigua Charter Yacht Show, taking place from 5 to 11 December, heralds the symbolic beginning of the charter season in the Caribbean. Well established as the key charter event for the region, this year’s edition will see an impressive fleet of 92 yachts gather in English and Falmouth Harbours to show off what they have to offer to the market.
Speaking exclusively to SuperyachtNews.com, Gaye Joyeau-Bourgeois, director and charter broker at Burgess, who has a big presence at the show, is positive about the importance of the event for the sector. “This excellently produced show is invaluable to all concerned and has a two-fold benefit,” she explained.
“It enables brokers to inspect first-hand the winter fleet, especially new additions, and it gives crew centre stage to showcase their expertise, personalities and cohesion, given that most yachts will have a few new faces. Equally, these first hand evaluations are essential for the 2015 summer bookings' successful yacht and client ‘marriages’.”
Maggie Vale, charter broker at Churchill Yacht Partners, said that the calibre of yachts and industry at the event is always high. “The Antigua Charter Yacht Show is the premier Caribbean event where brokers can view the best yachts available for charter in the area,” she explained. “This show draws the best and biggest registered yachts and brokers from around the world. There are only a few charter shows worldwide, and Antigua is definitely the top in terms of quality yachts, crew, and industry professionals. This show always pays off.”
Also in attendance this year is Captain Ben Craig-Cameron on board motoryacht Turquoise, who sees the show as integral to the yacht’s success. “Having attended both the MYBA Genoa and Antigua Yacht Charter shows over a period of many years, I think that they are an essential part of any charter yacht’s marketing programme. They help to keep the yacht at the forefront of some of the most influential charter brokers in the industry, which translates directly into bookings.”
This year’s show will provide an interesting insight into the state of the charter sector going into 2015, which many believe is in a state of recovery, having bounced back from the post-recession dip.
SuperyachtNews.com will be reporting on the ground throughout the week to provide readers with regular updates.
