The Superyacht Group takes to the water

Now a regular feature in the International Superyacht Society’s (ISS) calendar, the ISS Regatta took place this weekend with 13 yachts taking part, all crewed by teams of industry professionals. This year saw The Superyacht Group’s very own Superyacht Events enter a boat into the regatta with a team of seven keen and enthusiastic crew from the group. The weekend’s events comprised of eight races spread over two days of sailing between Hamble Marina and the Isle of Wight, and evening entertainment including an auction and raffle in aid of the regatta’s chosen charity, Sail 4 Cancer.

Fortunately the rain held off for the first day of racing and competitors were blessed with some consistent winds of 15 knots, meaning that the teams had to quickly find their sea legs. Start lines were packed and a turning tide meant a number of recalled starts due to the majority of the fleet starting prematurely. It was quickly evident that the BMT Nigel Gee boat and defending champions, Icon Connect, were the favourites to win.

The winds dropped for day two of racing and the sun came out once again. While the Superyacht Events’ boat may have remained towards the back of the fleet, spirits were high and we decided to adopt a more gracious approach to the racing as we allowed some of the male-only boats to borrow two of our female crewmembers for the highly contested Lady’s Race, which demanded that boats have a lady helm otherwise they would incur a 10 per cent penalty.

Following a barbeque at the Island Sailing Club on Saturday night, supported by Nigel Spoone, an auction and raffle took place to raise money for Sail 4 Cancer, a charity that organises sailing opportunities for cancer patients and their families. The regatta culminated in a prize giving ceremony held back at Banana Wharf in Hamble Marina where the BMT Nigel Gee team was awarded the prize of overall regatta winners. In the Lady’s Race, our very own Phoebe Jackson took the guest prize for her appearance on the BMT Nigel Gee boat and Icon Connect’s Suzie Jones was awarded the Lady's trophy.

The annual ISS Regatta is a unique way for the society to offer its members, their clients and vendors a memorable event on the water. Event organiser, ISS President Ken Hickling, announced the impressive amount that the 2014 regatta had raised for charity. “The regatta raised over £2500 in support of Sail 4 Cancer and we had a great time,” said Hickling. A special thanks also goes to Medaire for providing boats with first aid packs and Viking travel for handling the Saturday night dinner payments.

Team BMT Nigel Gee were overall regatta winners.

The ISS Regatta has grown year on year and the organising committee hope that its popularity will continue to grow, as the regatta has the capacity to host 20 yachts. With the date for the 2015 edition set for the first weekend in June, it is something to put in the diaries now.
