H2O Maritime and ItalianYachtMaster association delve into MLC
By Lulu Trask
The ItalianYachtMaster association is continuing to show signs of professionalism and cement its status as a newly-formed body within the superyacht industry. On 5 April, 2014, the captains forming the association were subject to a presentation and workshop by H2O Maritime on the subject of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC).
Taking place in the Marina di Loano Yacht Club, the workshop included an introduction to and overview of the Convention and its objectives as well as looking in more detail at specific areas of the Code that are having, and will continue to have, more direct effects upon the superyacht industry. Also discussed was the measures and requirements to be implemented on board and obtain compliance with the Convention and the ways in which captains can ensure compliance is ongoing between inspections. Also discussed were the benefits of compliance, as well as the key topics that have emerged since August, 2013, when Port State Control officers begun their inspections. The Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance (DMLC) Part II was also a key focus of the workshop - this being the document required to be prepared by the vessel's owner ore representative to demonstrate compliance, it is an area of pertinence for captains.
The workshop closed with a discussion between H20 Maritime and the ItalianYachtMaster captains, the focus of which turned out to be the Seafarer Employment Agreement (SEA) and social security benefits for Italian seafarers working on both EU and non-EU flagged vessels.
The day ended on a relaxed note, with a meal hosted at the Zeffirino restaurant overlooking the Marina di Loano, by the board of directors of the ItalianYachtMaster association - one which continues to spread its influence across and cement its position within the superyacht industry.
