High hopes for Singapore Yacht Show

By

Last year’s Singapore Yacht Show generated positive and enthusiastic responses from its exhibitors, who said that the show was bigger and more targeted than ever before. Now established as Asia’s most reputable yacht show, and with an increase of international exhibitors from the top end of the sector coming on board, there are high hopes for the 2014 show. With less than three months until the opening, SuperyachtNews.com spoke to Andy Treadwell, managing director of the organiser, Singapore Yacht Events, to discuss what the industry can expect from this year’s show.

“The big boat industry is really sitting up and taking notice now because we had such a successful show last year and it really has become the main platform in Asia,” explains Treadwell. “The event is increasing exponentially, in both scale and scope. We are adding classic cars, art, fine wine and other lifestyle interests designed to make the show even more compelling to high-net-worth visitors from all over Asia, but the focus is and always will be on yachts and boats."

In addition to leading names like Curvelle, Heesen, Gulf Craft, Northrop & Johnson, Princess Yachts, Simpson Marine and Sunseeker, who have supported the show since its launch just four years ago, Alloy Yachts, Edmiston & Company, Philippe Briand and Porto Montenegro have all recently confirmed that they will also be exhibiting for the first time. Burgess has confirmed the attendance of the 60m motoryacht Cloud 9, Picchiotti - Perini Navi are bringing the 50m motoryacht Exuma, Yacht Zoo will be there with a 30m yacht, and there are more announcements to come shortly, Treadwell reveals.

With such a surge in the growth of the Singapore Yacht Show, can the industry expect to see the growth of Asia overall as an emerging market in the yachting industry? “Yes of course – it's happening before our eyes," Treadwell responds. "But I still think that you have to be realistic about how quickly the market for actually buying superyachts in Asia can possibly develop. We should be focusing on charter as much as anything – it's a more obvious first step. But without a doubt, Singapore is emerging head over heels as the capital of Asia. I used to say that China and South East Asia are two very separate markets, and of course they still are, but this is the main platform now for both of those markets. The Chinese love coming to Singapore, like everybody does. It is rivalling Switzerland as the world’s wealth management centre, it is now boasting the second biggest casino in the world; this combined with the investment value of the properties here and the whole lifestyle of Singapore means it is literally surging ahead of everywhere else in Asia. And Asia itself is the booming part of the world.”

"You have to remember that part of the reason that the yachting market is so small here is because it has just never been in the culture. But this is changing at a rate of knots and that is why the industry has certainly a large part of its hope pinned on Asia."

In terms of expectations for this year’s show, the organisers wish to strengthen their position as the leading yacht show and boat show in Asia. “We want to consolidate on that, and we expect to,” says Treadwell. “We want to see even bigger numbers of even more targeted visitors coming to the show ready to buy and charter. We want to see everybody going away with more business and even more enthusiasm about the potential business here, because Asia is all about the potential. You have to remember that part of the reason that the yachting market is so small here is because it has just never been in the culture, and it started from nothing just a few years ago. But this is changing at a rate of knots and that is why the industry has certainly a large part of its hope pinned on Asia.”

And Treadwell believes that this change is happening for a combination of reasons: “You have an industry out here that is working really hard to develop the business and there are all sorts of ways of doing that. We ourselves are not just focused on putting on a show and bringing in high-net-worth visitors, we are also focused on trying to get the existing owners from the Med over to Asia. Firstly, so they can see how fantastic it is and secondly, so that the local people can see what a great lifestyle it is and want to get involved. So that is why we are launching the charter-focused show in Phuket, which is the destination hub and the cruising centre of Asia. That is launching next February with the aim of helping to get the big boats out here.”

Singapore Yacht Show will be held 10-13 April, 2014 at ONE°15 Marina Club in Sentosa Cove, Singapore.
