Pendennis 'A2' transformation wins ISS refit award
By Lulu Trask
Pendennis' 2012 remodelling of the 1983 Feadhsip motoryacht, A2, has been awarded first place in the 'Best Refit Yacht' category at the International Superyacht Society's (ISS') Awards, held at the Design Center of the Americas.
The project took 16 months to see through from the day she arrived in Falmouth as Masquerade of Sole in February 2011. She was stripped back to bare steel and aluminium throughout and had her stern and top deck remodelled completely, and then extended across three levels with the result of a 5m LOA increase.
"We have worked with Pendennis on numerous occasions and this project was one of the most challenging and rewarding yet," explained John Bonafoux, managing director at BMT Nigel Gee, structural engineers on A2. "The vision of the owner and collaboration of BMT Nigel Gee with the Pendennis project team has produced a truly amazing yacht, completely unrecognisable from her former self."
The refit saw an extensive replacement of all equipment and technology, including new deck equipment, a complete rebuild of the engine room, installation of modern bridge technology and the latest AV equipment. This, combined with the help of Pendennis' engineering team, meant that when A2 left the yard her cruising speed had increased from 12 to 14.5 knots, with improved fuel consumption.
New interiors by New York-based Peter Marino Architect were introduced to the owner and guest areas, including bleached oak bulkheads and dark palm wood interiors, as well as the use of textured leather and clew-lined furniture.
"Although we have performed extensive yacht restorations over the years, A2 was a milestone for the yard in terms of our remodelling projects, and really showcased all elements of our in-house skills and experience from naval architecture through to exterior finishing," said Mike Carr, managing director of Pendennis. "Since her launch, the yacht has generated enormous interest as to the possibilities of upgrading and improving existing yachts. This type of project demonstrates a fresh approach for discerning owners who want to rejuvenate their superyacht experience without the time and financial implications of a custom new build project."
