The show must go on

ICOMIA’s Barbara Fountoukos has reported from the International Boat Show & Festival (ISBF) in Sanya, Hainan, which has survived an orange alert from China’s Meteorological Centre, and will begin in earnest only three days after it was postponed. Fountoukos has said that, miraculously, the show will be built from scratch in time for a planned weekend opening.

The show had to be put on hold because of the imminent arrival of Typhoon Nari but the tropical storm failed to make landfall and the exposure was limited to heavy wind and rain. “Luckily we are delayed by just three days and our exhibitors and Conference delegates have been extremely supportive”, said Jin Chao, director of the show’s organising committee.

This means that, despite the apocalyptic horizon captured in these images, remarkably the show will begin on 18 October with the ICOMIA ISBF Conference, with the show itself opening the following day.

Now that the typhoon has passed, the show is being built up from scratch.

The show’s primary focus remains the pleasure boat market but there is also an extensive itinerary of forums and conferences evaluating the state of the Asian nautical market. “IBSF integrates international yachting industrial chains to build an industrial platform for the yacht enterprises around the world,” Mr Jin explained. “It [facilitates] business cooperation and trade negotiation and [promotes] industrial [growth] and international communication. Therefore, it is a true festival for the international yachting industry.”

Fearing Typhoon Nari the show's organisers postponed it by three days.

Accompanying the Chinese pavilion, international pavilion, 100 yachts and estimated 30,000 visitors will be 10 industry meetings. These meetings will attract 600 industry professionals and government delegations from 14 Chinese regions, say the show’s organisers. Furthermore, the International Yacht Economic Forum has been billed as ‘a Davos Economic Forum for the international marine industry.

The weather now appears more clement for the revised start date. (Images courtesy of Barbara Fountoukos).

The resilience of the show's organisers is something all too familiar to those in the superyacht industry destined for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at the end of October.
