New Zealand breakfast to showcase wealth of cruising potential
By Rebecca Dark
Tourism New Zealand, Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and Asia Pacific Superyachts will be hosting a breakfast event at the Monaco Yacht Show to highlight the cruising destinations available around the country.
Presented by Jeanette Tobin, Asia Pacific Superyachts and Jason Hill, ATEED, with representatives from Tourism New Zealand, as well as captains who have cruised the region, the breakfast will take place on Thursday 26 September at the Virage Restaurant between 8-9.45am.
The event will showcase video footage of the cruising opportunities available to yachts as well as myriad cultural attractions.
"We want to point out that New Zealand is more than a refit destination which it is known as, and has been marketed by the Marine Industry as, for the past decade”, said Tobin. “New Zealand became a well known destination for refit while yachts were in the Pacific region. Unfortunately, they did it so well, that yachts would come here for refit - and the owners and charter guests wouldn't follow. I’ve worked for three years trying to get the industry to understand that to grow the market in New Zealand we needed to showcase New Zealand as a destination for owners and charter guests.”
Tobin also emphasised that New Zealand can be seen as a ‘boutique’ destination for owners and charterers, with a huge variety of destinations, from subtropical beaches to fjords.
As such, an event such as MYS is important to help to showcase a prime location that is not being utilised by the superyacht industry to its full potential, as Tobin explained:
“MYS is critical for New Zealand to showcase itself as a destination for cruising/chartering. We need to change a few minds and ensure we’re not seen just as a refit port! It’s the most prestigious of the shows and it’s the largest… We’re a little country and we have to stand up and make some noise if we want to compete in a world where everyone is yelling at the top of their lungs! So Monaco was the logical choice.”
Aimed at captains and brokers, as well as the media, the presentation will also touch on Auckland, which, along with offering a city lifestyle, has a sheltered harbour dotted with islands housing attractions such as wine production and dormant volcanoes.
“Auckland has a proud marine history, having hosted numerous yachting events including America’s Cup events, the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series and the Volvo Ocean Race Auckland stopover. Auckland will host the stopover again in 2015,” said Jason Hill of ATEED.
This event will run as part of a series of bespoke breakfast meetings during Monaco Yacht Show, organised by The Superyacht Events Agency.
