Wet and windy opening to 2012 Pendennis Cup
By Jason Holtom
Comments
Poor visibility with low cloud and steady drizzle failed to dampen spirits on the first day of the Pendennis Cup as crews and spectators were treated to a spectacular finish, with the first three yachts crossing the finish line separated by just 27 seconds.
Principal Race Officer, Peter Craig managed to get the timing intervals of the staggered start just right, with the eight larger yachts in the Pendennis Cup class starting in two minute intervals to ensure a safe start and a close finish for the first of four races this week in Falmouth Bay.
There was plenty of wind right from the start, building up from 18 knots at the start to a solid 25 knots true at the finish, testing crews and equipment.

Fortunately Pendennis have set up a temporary large sail loft for North Sails in their shipyard, which was also used for the J Class regatta last week and so repairs could be made overnight.

The handicap winner was the 1915 Herreshoff gaff schooner Mariette, who started first and was only overtaken in the final closing stages of the race, crossing the line in fourth place.

The fleet of four yachts in the Little Dennis fleet sailed a shorter 18 mile course, with the 1904 William Fife designed and built classic yawl Tomahawk crossing the line just 34 seconds ahead of the 1964 S&S designed sloop Firebrand - owned and helmed by superyacht designer Ed Dubois.

Racing continues from Wednesday to Saturday with a layday on Thursday and the promise of continuing wind and rain.
