The Superyacht Group makes waves at ISS Regatta

This weekend saw the resurrection of the once popular Brokers Regatta under it’s new name The International Superyacht Society (ISS) Regatta. The brainchild of new ISS president Ken Hickling, the event saw 10 yachts of 40 ft and over 90 industry professionals assemble for two days of semi competitive sailing on the Solent off the south coast of the UK.
Hickling commented the event “was rebooted due to popular demand within the Southampton superyachting community”. By becoming an ISS event it is hoped it will appeal to an international community and become a permanent fixture once again, having last been held in 2009.
The Superyacht Group was kindly invited on board Magnus Marine’s boat to taste the action first hand. The event itself comprised five races over a busy two-day schedule. A full spectrum of sailing abilities were on display, with the emphasis of the event on fun and networking, spiced up with the natural competitive nature of some on board the yachts.

Day one was blessed with challenging sailing conditions with strong winds (25-30 knots) complimented by sunny spells. The racing was delayed as the yachts ambled out of Port Solent but the sailing was soon underway with Awlgrip and BMT Nigel Gee finishing the day as the teams to beat. One medium sized collision between Airship and Icon Connect was the talking point of the day; culpability is still open to interpretation! The day closed with a lively evening of drinks and networking arranged by Trimline Superyacht Interiors.

Neither fuzzy heads nor overcast conditions were able to dampen another fine day of racing on Sunday. Three races followed including the traditional Ladies Race. The weekend was capped off by the prize giving ceremony which saw BMT Nigel Gee crowned deserved 2012 winners. The full race results can be seen below.

The weekend was a resounding success with a healthy head count, plenty of sea tales and a fantastic atmosphere. Thanks go to Ken Hickling and his team (including race official Tim Bannister of Akzonobel) for organising and Mark Binnie of Burgess for supplying the committee boat.
