International Superyacht Society 2012 Awards of Distinction

The International Superyacht Society (ISS) has announced that nominations for the 2012 Annual Awards of Distinction are now open to the yachting industry and the yachting public.

The awards ceremony, which celebrates personal achievements within the industry ranging from crewmembers to the corporate office of ocean stewardship, is to take place at the annual gala that marks the opening of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. This year, the gala is to take place on 25 October at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort.

A 501 (c) 6 non-profit organisation, ISS operates as a communications conduit for issues affecting the marketplace, owners, crew and industry members, building alliances worldwide with regional associations, and striving for the strengthening and growth of the superyacht industry as a whole. The annual, peer-reviewed awards are a manifest recognition of achievement within the industry, based on both individual and collective expertise, leadership and dedication to raising the standards of design, construction, maintenance, repair and operation of superyachts.

The ISS Awards of Distinction are made possible by the perpetual support of established sponsors. The society also welcomes new sponsors who see ISS involvement as a means of creating transparency in the worldwide marketplace. The Society has confirmed Burger Boat Company as the new sponsor of the ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award. The society has also retained the commitment of Robb Report to the ISS Leadership Award, and of Westrec to the Distinguished Crew Award.

The descriptions of the categories for ISS’s Awards of Distinction are as follows:

ISS Business (Person) of the Year:
The ISS Business (Person) of the Year is awarded to those demonstrating excellence in their area of superyacht expertise. Nominations come from both the industry and the ISS Board, the Board then selecting the finalists.

ISS Distinguished Crew Award:
Candidates for the Distinguished Crew Award (DCA) are nominated by the industry and finalists are selected by a panel of judges. The DCA honour specifically recognises crewmembers whose distinguished acts of service best exemplify the standards to which professional yacht crew should aspire.

Excellence in Innovation Award:
Spanning every sector of the industry, from crew training to technological advances, the Excellence in Innovation Award is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated considerable innovation in their endeavours. Nominees are elected by the industry and ISS Board Members cast a vote to determine the finalists.

ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award:
The ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award celebrates stewardship of marine ecosystems. Environmental leadership, global oceanic conservation and resource preservation are prerequisites for nomination. The award gives praise to the integration of environmental technologies and resource management that aim to set attainable standards for environmentally beneficial adaptation of the design, engineering and building of superyachts. Nominations can be made by yacht owners and the yachting industry, and finalists are selected is by a panel of judges, including Mr. Cousteau himself.

ISS Leadership Award:
The only award for which nominees are elected by ISS itself, the Leadership Award is presented to an individual or business whose distinctive work and commitment to the industry has contributed over a substantial period of time to the sustainable growth of the superyacht community worldwide. Nominations are made by ISS board members, and the judging panel consists of previous recipients of the award.
