Maxi trimaran Banque Populaire on round the world record breaking pace

Banque Populaire V passed the Cape of Good Hope on Sunday and entered the Indian Ocean after just 11 days and 21 hours since leaving Ushant.
French skipper Loick Peyron and his 12 man crew team on the 40m maxi trimaran Banque Populaire V are looking to beat the reference time of 48 days 7 hours 44 minutes 52 seconds for the Jules Verne round the world record set by Franck Cammas on the 31m Groupama 3 in March 2010.
In the final approach to the Cape of Good Hope, the traditional first quarter of the crossing of the three capes (Hope, Lewin and Horn), Peyron and his crew were making 800 mile days at an incredible average 24 hour sailing speed of 34 knots.
On passing Cape Hope Banque Populaire V was over 1,769 miles (over two days sailing) ahead of the previous reference time set by Groupama 3, having already set a new record time from the start line off Ushant to the equator of just 5 days, 14 hours and 55 minutes.
"This record is almost indecent,” remarked Peyron. "A few decades ago,
twelve days was the time set by Charlie Barr to cross the Atlantic, a
record he held for a long time. And today, it is almost the time it took us
to get to the Southern Africa. However, we should not forget that we are
sailing on an extraordinary machine. Banque Populaire is an amazing tool
that uses the intelligence of men and the work of a team. "
Now sailing in the Indian Ocean, Banque Populaire V, designed by VPLP is faced with a difficult sea requiring the sailors to slow down a little.
“The instructions given by the skipper are clear: we do not exceed 30 knots! We finally jibed and are now sailing on starboard," remarked helmsman/trimmer
Brian Thompson . "We had not made a manoeuvre since the Canaries, which
is also a record! The sea is very rough and we have to fight at the helm to
slow the boat down as it is very intense for her right now. We are going
along a front and should be arriving around the Kerguelen Islands by
Tuesday night."
