Fourth Swan 115 listed for sale

German Frers explains how the design has been geared towards a client looking for performance…

The fourth hull in the Swan 115 series has been listed for sale, following a decision from the original client the boat was commissioned for to buy a new Swan. With the project nearing completion, a potential buyer could have the boat delivered in about a month.

“The Swan 115 represents a step forward in cruising/racer design,” Frers explains. “The initial conceptual work was undertaken for a couple of potential clients looking to increase the return in terms of the enjoyment and joy of owning a large sailing yacht. Besides the customary family cruising in comfort, they were looking for extra adrenaline-pumping racing and sailing at higher maximum speeds downwind.”

The Swan 115.04 is a Flush Deck version of the 115 series, which is also available in a semi-raised saloon ‘S’ version, and is therefore targeted at prospective clients with an interest in racing. “The 76-tonne displacement racing version will be capable of very high speeds, especially reaching and running, similar to those of the grand-prix maxis,” adds Frers.

“The racing version has a 6.75/4.6 m lifting keel for even higher pointing ability and weight reduction. The keel profile area was calculated for a comfortable helm balance and the foil shape was chosen from our proven record of CFD analysis. A twin rudder configuration was chosen to match the lifting-keel draft reduction and powerful stern shape and enable full control under sail.”

An efficient and modern sail plan and rig has been drawn with a square top mainsail and the yacht has a bowsprit for improved downwind performance. Frers also points out the ample aft cockpit where the helm and sheets are located, a comfortable bimini-covered one-level centre cockpit with C-seats for 12 guests and four halyard winches at the mast.

The interior design brief for deVosdeVries design was to create something different and contemporary, but with a casual and welcoming feel. These initial design proposals resulted in a light grey, stained oak finish with a brushed treatment throughout. The finish also maintains a link with the base material Nautor traditionally uses for its interiors.
