The second hull in Hoek Design’s Truly Classic 128 series, 42m Vijonara, was delivered from Pendennis Shipyard last spring during the 30th anniversary year of both shipyard and owner’s representative MCM.

The project started in Bloesma, Netherlands – where the aluminium hull was built – and was completed by the Pendennis team in the UK. Nigel Ingram, co-founder of MCM, explains that the project benefitted from the cooperation of the yacht’s experienced Swiss owners. The owners had previously owned several smaller sailing boats, but Vijonara was their first new-build project, and they were very involved throughout the whole process.

“[The clients] had a very clear vision: requesting a bowsprit capable of supporting large downwind sails as they enjoy lounging in the netting on the bow while underway,” says Ingram. “They also enlisted Hermès to devise the interior décor which features a study in the deckhouse and a gym.”

Ingram adds that a major challenge was fitting everything into the limited space on board. “Those long elegant overhangs mean that you lose interior volume,” he explains. “This was an issue, especially when it came to the ceiling heights below deck, because the owner is quite tall.”

There was also a tight time constraint on the construction schedule that had to fit in with the owners’ cruising plans. Pendennis was able to complete the build and fit out in just 18 months. Ingram says this was achieved thanks to careful cooperation and teamwork from everyone involved. Ingram and the owners are continuing their relationship as the yacht has signed up to MCM’s Yacht Management division.
