We asked superyacht crew to review their favourite marinas, and the first review is in. Jak Deaking, first officer of M/Y Fusion, reviews Malta's Grand Habour Marina.…

We want to hear about as many superyacht marinas as we can directly from you, the crew, in a bid to find out which is your favourite marina. Our first review is in, and it's from Jak Deaking, first officer of M/Y Fusion.

1. Why Grand Harbour Marina (GHM)?

Our decision to come to Grand Harbour Marina was a joint one, based on price and the quality of the workmanship that we had experienced on a previous visit. Obviously the protection afforded from prevailing weather conditions by the impressive natural harbour was also a factor in our decision.

2. Marina competition

We had solicited quotes from numerous marinas around the western Mediterranean which were within a reasonable distance from Naples, where we finished up our 2015 summer season.

3. Previous visits

I had been here while working on a different yacht, and Fusion had been here during the winter period of 2013 I believe.

4. First impressions

The first impressions of GHM, and Valletta in general, were extremely impressive – an imposing ancient fort, and the city of Valletta itself welcomes marinas to an island with a rich history and a welcoming, friendly culture. Once we had arrived, the helpfulness of all the marina staff, as well as locals, was the enduring first impression.

5. Most impressive aspects

The facilities and staff without a doubt – water, electricity and super-fast Wi-Fi were hooked up almost immediately, and the knowledgeable docking masters made valuable suggestions regarding when to expect weather, and when/if at all we might need to move lines for new arrivals – the space between each berth means that this has been refreshingly infrequent!

6. Improvements

I wouldn’t say any improvements are needed. As far a crew are concerned, there are frequent interesting trips put on by the GHM staff, so there’s something to look forward to, adequate parking and reliable electricity.

7. Future visits

I would absolutely visit again. It really has started to feel like home – we couldn’t ask more of a marina or the staff, and the contractors locally have been great value for money.

8. Crew facilities

They were to my liking – easy access to local facilities and area. Malta’s size makes it super easy to get around.

9. Local recommendations

The historic Valletta, Mdina (the silent city), Blue Grotto, markets at Marsaskalla and Marsaslokk, Gozo Carnival, the amazing cliffs to the north of the island… There are too many to remember!

10. The marina team

I feel totally like part of the family at GHM. They make each yacht feel important, and like there’s not enough they can do for you, regardless of LOA – a rare quality in my experience!
