The theme of the eleventh edition of Designer’s Days in Paris was Conversations. “Is a design object not the reflection of a conversation between a designer, a creator, a manufacturer or an artisan?” asked Alain Lardet, president of the event. Consequently the five-day homage to design centred on exhibitions, talks, debates, roundtables and the ideas of sharing, exchanging and mutual enrichment. Luxury carpet manufacturer Tai Ping, manufacturers of custom rugs for yachts, used this theme as inspiration for an unusual temporary art installation in honour of Designer’s Days and the upcoming relocation of its headquarters.

Created by Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman, the founders of Interware, a fashion forward haute couture clothing brand, the installation is a playful experiment in the use and feel of materials. Referring to it as “transversal design” the duo used marble as the main object of the piece’s ‘conversation’. Solid, smooth and cold, marble is the perfect foil to rugs, which are by their very nature warm, soft and comfortable. “We like the idea that rugs can be sculpted as marble especially in the way it is executed by Tai Ping artisans,” comment Galante and Lancman. “We found the idea of weaving marble extremely amusing.”

Using two Tai Ping rugs with sculpted borders, Galante and Lancman have reinterpreted the design of famous marbles like white Carrara marble, as featured in Q4, and Grand Antique, the marble preferred by King Louis XIV, using just wool, silk and lurex. On display on the ground floor of the Hôtel de Livry in the heart of Saint-Germain’s 7th arrondissement, the installation will act as a preview of Tai Ping’s soon-to-be relocated European headquarters at the same hotel. Alongside the giant rug sculpture will be a selection of other objects chosen by Galante and Lancman, as well some of Tai Ping’s hand-tufted carpets.

The new Tai Ping headquarters will officially open for business in September 2011, while the showroom will remain under construction until January 2012.
