Having presented its 110-metre concept at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show, Oceanco has stepped up in size with its new PA122 concept based on its smaller cousin. The Dutch shipyard approached regular collaborators Sam Sorgiovanni in Australia and Nuvolari & Lenard in Venice to develop the project, with the Italian studio’s design presented in these pages.

“It is less known that we trace a marketing development for the yards we’re involved with”, comments Dan Lenard, “and so we pushed the new 120-metre concept. Once the layout of the yacht had been developed together with the basic naval architecture, the shipyard’s engineering department set to work developing the final platform, while the studio worked on the layouts and the styling.”

Although Oceanco provided a brief that the vessel had to be designed to conform with SOLAS guidelines, carry a Eurocopter on a certified helideck and house a swimming pool of at least 12x5 metres, Nuvolari & Lenard worked independently to design a muscular vessel that would make a powerful statement on the water while maintaining the Oceanco brand identity.

“The lead was to design a serious ship”, continues Lenard, “that was clearly conceived by a design team that understands superyachts and the sea for a client that shares the same qualities. Adding detailing to a yacht of this size becomes a challenge and so the long curves are defined with rather sharp and readable lines that add personality to the profile. Make no mistake: this is not like designing a car, not least because it’s a thousand times bigger, so soft, blobby shapes get lost in the overall dimensions.”

Innovative design features include the external glass elevators that penetrate the aft deck area. Able to accommodate four owners, 24 guests and 45 crew, the design includes two helicopter landing areas (with a certified flight zone towards the bow to accommodate a Eurocopter 155) and a transparent, air-conditioned, telescopic hanger on the bridge deck.

As with Vibrant Curiosity, their previous project for Oceanco, the PA122 concept reveals some signature Nuvolari & Lenard touches. Chief amongst these are the distinctive verticals imposed by the smoke stacks and aft elevators. Lenard describes this vertical interruption to the horizontal lines of the superstructure and sheer of the hull as “a kind of a pit-stop for the eye.” Rather than disguising these technical features for the sake of a clean profile, they are emphasised for dramatic effect.

There are no plans at this stage for taking the PA122 to the build stage, but the project is fully engineered and construction could start at short notice.
