While there are plenty of design events to keep us occupied at the moment, a little peak into the future can rarely be resisted, especially when it comes to a look at what we can expect at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour’s Focus 2011. To be held alongside London Design Festival in September, Focus is known for showcasing the latest products and top quality design from over 400 DCCH brands. Opening up its doors for a special sneak preview of the Autumn/Winter designs that will be launched at Focus 11, DCCH revealed some of the trends that will be big next season.

Metal finishes will continue to prove popular, but have evolved yet again to take on more of an oxidised look, creating that sense of edgy, pared-down luxury that we have come to expect. Focus 11 will see metallic lamp bases, tables, such as the bronze Siena nest of tables from Decorus, and even wallcoverings, like Antique Mirror from Cole & Son, which has a unique tiling effect.

For textiles, SYD saw a lot of sketching and arty bold prints, reminiscent of the works of Lucienne Day in the 70s. One print from Sanderson caught our eye with its bright colours and heavy black lines, almost in the style of a Matisse painting. Abbott and Boyd also had some pretty sketched prints with a distinct nautical feel. Wallcoverings also embraced the hand-drawn sketch trend, with the Livia print from Romo.

The preview also revealed that textures will feature in a big way at Focus 11, in particular the quilted surface. Illuminati, one of DCCH’s more recent showrooms, will be leading the way with textured lampshades, showing the Silvia pendant lamp, which demonstrates the quilted pattern surface perfectly, and the Valentine floor lamp, which has an almost industrial, exaggerated texture. It’s not just lamps that are featuring textures bamboo and tiled wallpapers are also incorporating more tactile surfaces, and carpets and upholstery will use the quilting as well as textured tweeds and weaves to give them the touchability factor. Look out for the Flagstone V carpet from Andre Fu for Tai Ping.

Finally, a lot of the pieces for Autumn/Winter embrace a real love of eccentricity and oddity. Victorian and gothic elements, strange shapes, weird prints and unusual designs will be popular. A peculiar piece from French artist and designer Serge Mansau created for Pierre Frey uses two 18th century-style dining chairs enclosed with high sides on wheels to create a sculpture-like loveseat really embodies this trend. The nice thing with the eccentric trend is that you can combine several different trends and really inject your own sense of style.

Focus 11 will run from 25 to 28 September at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour. To catch up on what happened at Focus 10, see the event summary in Q5.
