SuperyachtNews.com invited our Kiwi and Australian supplier friends to submit their latest product news and announcements to us. Here is a run down of what’s new to market from the Antipodes.

Awlgrip

Awlgrip launched Awlwood MA, an innovative new product for exterior wooden surfaces, in Q4 of 2012. Awlwood MA is currently only being launched in the Asia Pacific region but will soon be rolled out globally.  Awlwood MA is a high building, fast curing system that allows multiple applications per day reducing work time for the applicator. Coupled with being applicable over a wide range of temperatures and humidity’s, suitable for nearly all wood types and applicable by various methods, Awlwood MA is an outstanding choice for any applicator looking for a long-lasting robust exterior clear.

Awlwood MA has the convenience of single component products with performance associated with multi-pack systems. The unique and proprietary resin chemistry of the Awlwood MA Primer bonds directly to the wood cellular structure and the industry-unique incorporation of UV absorbers with polymer backbone in the Finish means that Awlwood MA performs and protects the substrate over a greater time period whilst retaining the same gloss, DOI and natural appearance as first application.

"With the unique, and proprietary, resin technology of Awlwood MA we have been able to give our customers the convenience of a single pack with the performance of a two-pack,” says Chris Toole, Global Brand Manager, Awlgrip. “Being able to apply multiple coats in one day, machine sandable within 24 hours and a vastly reduced number of coats all combine to give a system that is faster and more convenient for our customers, reducing overall work time and effort.”

C-Quip

C-Quip has developed a new carbon fibre pilot ladder that they say is an industry first.

"Carbon fibre is the practical material to use when developing new products where weight reduction and strength are a priority," said Paul Hackett, Managing Director of C-Quip. "This combined with the non-corrosive characteristics and the aesthetic charm of the carbon fibre weave makes it ideal for the superyacht environment."

The carbon fibre pilot ladder was developed in response to a gap in the market for a light but robust pilot ladder. It is designed and built in accordance with the requirements of SOLAS and ISO 799, with each step weighing just 1.2kg.

The pilot ladder is made up of 600mm wide clear carbon fibre treads with non-slip finish. Spreader bars can be attached to the standard treads with quick release pins to make a total width 1800mm for stability. The spreader bars can then be detached for compact storage.

The steps are clamped to side ropes by lightweight and durable glass filled nylon rope clamps. The side rope is UV resistant, low stretch braided polyester. Each step rests on the hull with integrated urethane bump pads to prevent any damage to the hull paintwork or carbon fibre tread. The length of the pilot ladder is manufactured to the client’s requirements, up to thirty steps in length.

Imaginocean Yacht Design

Tasmania-based Imaginocean Yacht Design (IYD) has completed an 8m custom tender named 'Contender' in conjunction with CWay Yachts. The concept was presented at the Monaco Yacht Show 2012 and has now come to fruition. The decision to custom build a tender was born out of the need for an attractive, functional day boat that offers protection from the weather, whilst still permitting the enjoyment of water sports. “There’s any number of limousine-style tenders out there: but they are a single use vessel," said designer Will Allison. "The objective here was to create a practical boat that would serve as a comfortable tender, but also be suitable for a range of other activities”. The result is an edgy-looking 8 metre boat with seating for up to eight guests and crew.  IYD employed a combination of aluminum for the hull and structure, with composites for the hardtop & much of the interior, to produce a durable vessel that is light enough to be lifted onto the aft deck of the mother ship.

Following the successful launch of the tender, CWay and IYD are currently collaborating on a number of other projects, including a 47 metre displacement motoryacht.

Jim Pauling Yacht Design

Catamarans are growing in popularity and now here's a catamaran hulled tender. The team at Jim Pauling Yacht Design have just finished the development stage of a new 4.4m type of catamaran that they are marketing as the perfect superyacht tender. "It provides all the benefits of a catamaran but in the size of a monohull," said Pauling. "The results have been very, very good with better safety, handling, control and efficiency." A full design and build programme is offered - construction takes places at Revolution Yachts in Auckland - and so the design can be customised to each indiivdual client's needs.

Manson Anchors

Manson Anchors has released the first seabed test results of their new Boss anchor, which they launched in mid-2012. They say the results were so good they even surprised the testing team.

A 35lb Boss 2 held 4200kg (9260lbs) - and bent 5/8” shackles in the process. Testing began with 40ft of 5/16 chain and 3/8 shackles and a scope of 5:1 using a 90 ton tug boat. “We pulled up to 2000kg (4500lb) but bent all the shackles. We returned to the dock, went to a chandlery and bought 5/8 shackles and 60ft of half inch chain. Back out testing on the tug again, and pulling on the 35lb Manson Boss. This time testing had to stop at 4200kg (9250lb) because the 5/8 shackles were all bending,” said Ned Wood, Manson Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

The Manson Boss weighs no more than other anchors, but it’s much bigger and the increased fluke size generates significantly more holding power.  As with all Manson anchors, the Boss is manufactured at Manson’s purpose built facility in Henderson, New Zealand by Lloyd’s Register approved welders and using approved mill steel. It also features a Shackle Preventor, which quickly changes the anchor from a fixed shank anchor into a sliding shank for safe and easy anchoring in rocks and coral. A high tensile steel shank is specially-designed to fit into tricky through rollers on launches.

Maxwell Marine

2013 will see superyacht windlass designer and manufacturer, Maxwell Marine, premiere their biggest ever windlass - a model will be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show.

For the first time the public will have the opportunity to view the stainless steel SY38 (meaning superyacht windlass suitable for use with 38mm stud link chain). There are two other AC powered SY38’s currently in production in Maxwell’s New Zealand factory. These are soon to be shipped to an undisclosed client currently building a 90 metre superyacht.

In addition to providing these two mirror image SY38 windlasses, Maxwell will also be supplying a complete ancillary anchoring package consisting of two VC32 (320 mm warping drum diameter) stern handling capstans and two mirror polished Chain Stopper/Tensioner units; along with other support equipment such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s), hand held windlass controllers/chain counters and an integrated electronic windlass monitoring helm station system and chain counter linked to the vessel’s on board computer.

Maxwell is proud to have won this contract and the order exemplifies Maxwell’s ability to supply specialised anchoring equipment to the world’s leading superyacht builders, whether in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australia, or in New Zealand, Maxwell’s home market.

Trident Insurance

Trident Insurance has launched a new superyacht insurance policy that is particularly beneficial to yachts visiting Australia.

"We offer advanced cover for a wide range of vessels that in the past, you or your insurance broker may have had to place into an overseas market," said Managing Director, Rick Wolozny. "Our insurance policies have been designed to cater for vessels in Australia or around the world whether permanently based or permanently cruising. We offer an Agreed Value policy and have several instances when we don’t deduct your excess so you are not out of pocket to make a claim on your pride and joy should the need occur."

Trident say their superyacht insurance package has many benefits that stand out;

- We agree to pay the reasonable cost of inspecting the hull after grounding: if no damage is found we don’t charge you your excess.
- Cover for failure in the working mechanism of machinery or motor generators or other electrical machinery and their connections which cease functioning or to function improperly.
- The vessel may be used for Private Pleasure purposes, business entertainment and/or charter for, warranted owner/owner’s permanent skipper in charge.

WASSP Ltd

Multibeam sonar manufacturer WASSP Ltd has announced details of the company’s latest range of multibeam sonar’s. WASSP parent company ENL Group has invested heavily in the new range and while they are not new to the hydrographic survey market the new range in particular the WMB3250 (formerly known as WASSP S) has been specially designed for the commercial sector. Although they are tailored primarily for the commercial market, “the range is also perfect for superyacht market," said Freddy Foote, PR rep for WASSP.  "It is ideally suited to expedition style superyachts, and those who have a high end game boat onboard for sport fishing etc.”

10 Knots

Not a new product as such, but 10 Knots reached out to us as a fairly new entrant to the crew clothing market. Based in Australia, the company was launched in 2011 by Joanne Bedwell who had been frustrated by the lack of good crew clothing options during her time in the industry. "Our Crew Uniforms provide a fresh, unique style focussing on modern lines with performance based design and fabrics," said Bedwell. "From Cadet to Captain and from Steward to Personal Masseuse we understand the hours, the physical aspect and the expectations of impeccable service and presentation." Ethically made in Australia, there are a variety of options available for both crew and practitioners.
