Marine Results has delivered a new set of sail batten to 75.2m sailing yacht Mirabella V, the largest measuring 24m long, to replace the original battens in the mainsail.

Twelve battens were crafted to meet the design brief: battens that were tougher, more flexible, and with a longer life.

The result was tubular battens that are made of a high-strength carbon fibre in an epoxy resin matrix. The battens had to be transported in lengths under 12m because of their size, and then joined together on site.

“We believe these are the longest sail battens ever made, so it was quite a challenge to ensure that we could meet Mirabella V’s brief, which quite simply stated that a tough structure was needed which was not prone to breakage,” commented Jon Morris, of Marine Results, who led the project. “With the help of our engineering partners we have delivered to specification.”

The battens have been fitted to a new mainsail, supplied by Doyle Sails, which measures 1557 metres squared and was first used in the 2011 St Barths Bucket.
