Ben Harrison
With a degree in architecture and a passion for sailing, designer Ben Harrison spent seven years with Andrew Winch Designs before joining Eisgaard Design in 2007, where he holds the position of creative director. Harrison is participating in the BV80 Case Study on day three of this year’s Global Superyacht Forum (GSF). Here the English designer tells us a bit more about his work.
SuperyachtDesign: Which project to date has been your favourite?
Ben Harrison: The 66m project 809 that we
have in build at RVL, she has some stunning features including a
three-deck glass atrium with sweeping cantilevered marble stair. It
certainly has a wow factor.
Describe your role in the production BV80?
We were engaged from the very start of the
project and have been responsible for the exterior and interior design.
Part of this process has been working closely with the Blohm+Voss
engineering team to develop the BV80 as a semi-custom yacht.
A focus group at this year’s GSF is
‘Design: Can we integrate the whole process – from ideas to engineering
to operation?’ What’s your opinion on this?
The design process should always take into
consideration all the disciplines involved, and of course the end users
(client and crew). I would not, however, see all these disciplines
literally coming together under one umbrella. We always believe that
great design is a series of well-decided compromises, and it is
necessary to be independent to fight for those elements you believe in
most strongly.
You are participating in the keynote case study on BV80, what can the audience expect to learn from your presentation?
The presentation will demonstrate how in this
instance, exhaustive market research, a well-defined design brief,
avant-garde and creative design thinking, intelligent marketing and
ultimately presentation, resulted in the launch and sale of the first
BV80 build slot. The nine month R&D, engineering and design process
is also an interesting aspect for which we hope to give the audience an
insight into.
