Celebrating 20 years of superyachting

This summer The Superyacht Group celebrates its 20th anniversary. To mark the occasion The Superyacht Report is devoted to a special 20 year retrospective of the industry, its achievements, its stars - both yachts and owners - and where it is heading for the future. Raise your glasses to 20 years of superyachting!…

The latest issue of The Superyacht Report celebrates a very special and landmark occasion in the history of The Superyacht Group and, inextricably, the superyacht industry itself.

Celebrating two decades of publishing, The Superyacht Report has chosen this year's August – September issue to deliver a comprehensive evaluation of how the superyacht market has grown since its publisher The Superyacht Group was launched in July 1992.

Announcing the retrospective, but also future thinking focus of this glittering issue, is a section devoted to a 20 year analysis. This is both an acute summary of the performance to date of each country as well as an enjoyable look back at the last 20 years – the key events, launches and moments that have shaped the industry as we know it today. Yachts that typified their year from trends they set to headlines they made, are presented from 70m Skat launched in 2002, whose military-esque exterior styling signaled a break away from traditional moulds, to 92m Eos in 2006, the largest sailing yacht in the world. The end of an era always forces attention on the future, so we also peer into the crystal ball for what hopes and fears lie ahead.

Double celebration: Marking 20 years of the superyacht industry and of TSR

For this special edition we were delighted to gain an audience with some industry luminaries and legends. Not least amongst these is lifelong yacht owner and seaman Sir Donald Gosling, owner of Leander G. Speaking to Group Chairman Martin H Redmayne the Rear Admiral (and now Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom as conferred on Gosling in April by the Queen) recalls the wonderful events that led to his ownership of 75m Leander G. Once a yacht under a different name in a hidden away yard in East Germany, her owner was lucky enough to take over her build in the early 90s, and to witness the historic role she played in hosting the Queen during her Jubilee duties and celebrations this summer.

We also hear from Joe Vittoria, a long-standing superyacht owner of 20 years who built his yachts in unconventional ways and places. And Dean Maggio, captain of M/Y Meteor gives a revealing interview about his life, his yachts and a recent tender project.

US Editor Esther Barney in conversation with superyacht owner Joe Vittoria

Fittingly for the summer, with its proliferation of toys and tenders on the water, this bumper summer issue's parallel focus is entertainment. In Tenders & Toys Josh Richardson of Superyacht Tenders & Toys outlines the process of ensuring a quality build that suits the owner’s needs. There’s also a look at the different types of tender that owners can choose from by John Apps of EYOS Tenders, plus a selection of the manufacturers’ latest products. Our section devoted to A/V & Entertainment sees an investigation into the latest issues, trends and technologies in the A/V business, including the thorny issue of after sales service.

Lastly, there are columns from our editors and contributors. Considering the increasingly polarised Eurozone and its impact on the future of the superyacht industry news editor Will Mathieson asks whether the failure of the southern European economies would force superyachts and their business upstream to the north. Business editor Don Hoyt Gorman takes a closer look at the damning data on second-quarter sales and the summer charter season, and considers if this will finally drive new business ideas to re-ignite the market. And guest columnists include industry experts Ken Hickling, who presents a progress report into the ISS's latest projects, and Captain Mike Hitch with a reflection on operational issues that have affected superyachts over the last 20 years.

As time goes by: 66 per cent of the entire fleet was delivered in the last 20 years

Finally, although reflection has been the mainstay of this issue, we also report on the action that continues to shape the landscape of our industry. Foremost of these is the 2012 HISWA Yacht Valley Tour, which offers an insight into the state of the Dutch superyacht industry, continuing to buffer the storm of economic woes. There is also a review of the American Superyacht Forum where the most pressing issues for North America’s large luxury-yacht industry were discussed.

A last word from our Editor in Chief, Martin Redmayne who started The Superyacht Group and its first publication, The Superyacht Report known then as The Wood Report, all those years ago.

“I have loved every minute of publishing TSG and all I can say is THANKYOU to everyone who has made their own special contribution in creating this unique company that only knows superyachts.”

Read the column in full as well as much more in this very exciting, special issue.
