ICON Yachts is reporting impressive figures for the first quarter of 2011, with a total of 444m of yachts in the yard with a mix of both new build and refit projects. ICON is one of the most recent entrants into the Dutch superyacht industry and didn’t move into its construction facility until 2007.

Despite entering the market on the eve of the global financial crisis, ICON is due to complete its fourth vessel, the 63m Midlandia in early 2012. The yard built its business model on a ‘predetermined operation platform’ idea: a standard, fully tank tested hull, which designers can use as a base upon which to develop a customised yacht. Amongst other advantages this method greatly reduces build times.

The drop in demand for new-build yachts in the wake of the crisis forced yards to adapt and explore other revenue streams; ICON was no exception, and it developed its refit capabilities and strategic alliance with other established yards.

Director of ICON Yachts, Jen Wartena, commented: “We are extremely pleased to report significant increase in market activity and now have orders stretching in 2014. With the recent signature of a letter of intent for a new construction concept based on the ICON 62 we are further establishing our market position in the list of highly regarded superyacht builders in the Netherlands. The repaint contract in cooperation with Balk Shipyard on the 60m M/Y Slipstream underlines our ability to serve competitively in the refit sector.”

The opinion of superyacht industry experts on the state of the market ranges from faint optimism to genuine confidence, but the state of ICON’s order book certainly seems hopeful. Larger projects still on the drawing board include a 73m design in collaboration with the Hotlab design office and an 85m under-3000GRT design that has developed from the yard’s hull platform. These projects will be on display at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show.
