Sanlorenzo secures three explorer contracts ahead of MYS

At MYS 2015 Sanlorenzo will be officially introducing its new 42m explorer vessel, the 460Exp. Sanlorenzo has already sold three 460Exps prior to it's official launch. SuperyachtNews.com spoke exclusively to Ferruccio Rossi about the new vessel and the show season.…

At the Monaco Yacht Show 2015 Sanlorenzo will, for the first time, be showcasing its new 42m, 460gt exploration vessel. SuperyachtNews.com spoke exclusively to Sanlorenzo’s group general manager, Ferruccio Rossi about the new vessel and the boat show season.

At the route of Sanlorenzo’s entry into the exploration market is the demand for freedom from its clientele. “The desire for people to escape is growing and life on land is becoming more stressful,” Rossi began, reflecting the opinions of the 460Exp’s soon-to-be owners. “I believe this idea of escaping is going to get stronger and stronger.”

This desire, Rossi explained, is not a reaction to any single contributing factor - it represents the power of choice. Owners may remain in marinas and reap the rewards of the marina infrastructure, or they can simply slip away for a number of weeks and remain self-sufficient and undisturbed. The ability to do both is the real attraction of explorer vessels.

“It’s a product we are very proud of,” Rossi said. And it is no wonder that Rossi is pleased - since the 460Exp’s conception three units have been sold, “And the product (460Exp) has not [even] officially been presented to the market yet,” he added.

Sanlorenzo 460Exp: Hull One

The clientele that make up the three signed 460Exp contracts come from a variety of locations. “Hull number one is going to a very visible and important US client, hull number two is going to a Mexican client and hull number three is going to a Swiss client.”

The variance in client geography is a good signal for Sanlorenzo moving forward. “It is important because we also plan to have hull number one at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show immediately after Monaco. She will be delivered to her owner and these two shows alone will provide wonderful visibility all round for the new explorer class,” Rossi said. “We plan to develop a full range of explorer yachts, shorter and longer, hull one will be the flagship for this new line.”

The 460Exp get its name not from its length, but from its gross tonnage. “We call the explorer the 460 even though it is 42m because we are especially proud of the technical department for keeping the gross tonnage beneath 500,” says Rossi. She is equipped with two CAT C32 Acert engines, capable of covering over 4000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 11 knots and has enough storage to be self sufficient for a number of weeks.“

As well as promoting the 460Exp Sanlorenzo is also in the process of developing the next step in the evolution of its full displacement range, taking the maximum size from 46m up to 52m, and the first hull should be completed by the end of 2016.

“Monaco is going to be important for us, we will be showcasing hull one of the 460Exp range in front of the market for the first time,” he concluded, adding that the yard hopes to have more contracts signed before the beginning of Monaco, but that Monaco is always a fantastic place to gain new custom and they hope to begin talks on at least one new contract at the show.
