Port Tarraco announces major upgrade to shoreside power

The Spanish marina will be upping its voltage capacity more than five times over with power boosted from 400 to 6,600 volts.…

Port Tarraco, Tarragona, Spain is upgrading its onshore power system to meet the needs of the ‘new giga yachts.’

It has announced plans to increase onshore power from its current 400 V, and 1250 Amps per connection, to 6.6 KV or 6,600 volts.

“Port Tarraco is now one of the only Mediterranean ports able to offer commercial and merchant marine standard power systems, which are becoming more commonly used on super and mega yachts,” read the announcement.

High-power onshore systems mean yachts in Port Tarraco will be able to operate using single cables connected to shore power rather than running on-board generators in port. The marina has also decided on the upgrade to address what it sees as impending  EU rulings:

“The indication is that in the near future there will be European directives requiring that yachts and merchant vessels in port use onshore power rather than generator,” said sales and marketing executive, Margarete Kalinowski.

Port Tarraco

Located at the heart of the residential area of Tarragona on the Catalonian coast of Spain, Port Tarraco can accommodate up to 64 yachts between 30 and 160 meters. Its particular USP is its safe and deep water port which provides a 9m draught, and its historic location - Tarragona city is a UNESCO World Heritage site - which is also only 40 minutes from to Barcelona International Airport.
