Pinmar introduces its new standard to London

Pinmar has held a seminar in London to outline the parameters comprising its new standard of quality. The 10-point programme will set a minimum standard that every Pinmar job must adhere to.…

Pinmar presented the third in its series of ‘Paint Standard’ seminars at the Wyndham Grand in Chelsea hosted by the the Superyacht Events Agency.

The seminars are designed to introduce Pinmar’s agreed standard for quality assurance to the wider industry. Pinmar has developed the parameters, exclusively, through extensive testing over many years. The move has been prompted, Pinmar says, because of the slow reaction of the industry to calls for an agreed universal standard of workmanship.

The event itself was hosted by Remi Millott, Pinmar’s Managing Director, who was joined by Kay-Johannes Wrede, CEO of surveyor Wrede Consulting and Dr. Benigna v. Brederlow, Head of Marketing for Wrede.

Millott opened the seminar by explaining how the standard had been established, following consultation sessions with the industry’s leading manufacturers and surveyors. With the establishment of the proposed ICOMIA standard still “at least a year away”, according to a member of the audience, the need for an exacting standard of paint application has become a pertinent issue for the wider industry.

In order to produce such a standard Pinmar has partnered with Wrede to devise a 10-point programme that all Pinmar paint jobs have to adhere to. Kay Wrede outlined the theory behind the programme, which measures colour shade, gloss, DOI, orange peel, film thickness, surface hardness, tension, dust and fairing, followed by a subjective examination from a qualified professional.

Dr v. Brederlow then guided the audience through the complex testing procedure, explaining the empirical processes that produced such precise results. These results have been analysed and the resulting figures adopted as Pinmar’s ‘standard’ – the benchmark for each of the categories that the final product must meet.

Millott conceded that establishing such a high standard would bring with it substantial challenges but he was confident that it would enhance the quality of the relationship between Pinmar and its customers, as well as prompting the wider industry to begin looking at standards of its own.

Millott said: “I dislike the use of panels – they always look amazing – but try reproducing that on a 90m hull. To paint a yacht to a certain standard you need to test the boat itself. Pinmar will order the exact batch requested by the owner, and paint the vessel in high and low visibility areas to determine whether the client is happy with our standard before we embark on the application itself. We then produce a report that sets the standard for the whole vessel. All of our installations are in accordance with ISO 9001.

“At Pinmar we feel that owners should be able to see what they’re getting at an early stage. This inspires confidence and ensures that they get the very best results.”

Following the seminar the delegates congregated for drinks and the opportunity to discuss the afternoon’s content.
