Meystyle, the inventors and makers of LED wallpaper, presented its latest collection, Nina, at this year’s 100% Design London exhibition, just one of the many events a part of the London Design Festival, which SYD attended. The LEDs are available on the entire collection, an idea that sisters Maria and Ekaterina Yaschuk first incorporated into their designs back in 2004.
The Nina collection was inspired by embroidery designs created by the co-founders’ late grandmother Nina, integrating traditional craft materials to compliment Swarovski crystals and LEDs that have become an integral part of their work. “For this collection we looked at the impressionist art movement for inspiration”, explains Ekaterina Yaschuk. The collection is hand finished with gold or silver dusting to create a tactile, hand crafted feel. In doing so, the London-based wallpaper specialist has managed to diffuse the light produced by the LEDs, making the wallpaper and the design more subtle and ambient.
“This collection is in many ways our most personal”, says Maria Yaschuk. “We loved sifting through our grandmother’s journals, picking out patterns and breathing new life into designs created decades ago. We also wanted to include the subtle colours, brush strokes and light effects made famous by the impressionists.”
Having the LEDs fully integrated into the material makes it possible to be past and hang the wallpaper like traditional wall covering. The digital designs are printed with a choice of a non-woven or paper substrate and matching designs can be printed onto a wide variety of flame retardant fabrics for upholstery and cushions. Although Meystyle has yet to supply to the superyacht industry, the company continues to grow with the aim of expanding into different markets.
