MYBA calls for industry input on crew qualifications
By Lulu Trask
In this industry we are all too guilty of complaining without offering a solution, and one superyacht sector in which this is particularly evident is that of the crew. But the superyacht industry – and the wider use of the term ‘industry’ is intended here – has been given an opportunity to change the landscape of what is arguably our biggest map of complaints.
MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association has put together a survey looking at the skills required by superyacht crew. Having now joined the UK Maritime Skills Alliance, an organisation which can create qualifications for schools and colleges throughout the UK, MYBA is flying the flag for relevant crew training. The superyacht sector now can have its voice heard and be recognised as needing its own set of rules and, in this case, crew qualifications.
So far the only people to complete the survey have been superyacht crew, but the relevance of crew training to every sector in this industry, whether build, refit, design, charter or management (to name a few) is absolutely paramount.
Not only does the survey offer you a chance to have your say in how the superyacht crew training becomes cemented within UK education, it offers you the chance to shout about how you believe crew should be trained to benefit your business and, most importantly, the end user – the owner.
This is the industry’s chance to stop complaining and start doing. Take the survey here.
