The Crew Report's boat show issue is out now!
With the season drawing to a close, the past few months have seen some significant events for the world of superyacht crew. With particular reference to the implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC), alcohol on board, crew rotation and quality of crew training, issue 65 of The Crew Report is out and brings you intelligent features in response to topical industry issues.
At this year’s American Superyacht Forum, discussion turned to crew quality, with a consensus by many that today’s training schools were merely ‘paper merchants’. Our media coverage of the event quickly sparked some serious and extensive debate from the training providers; many claimed fingers of blame were pointing towards the wrong people and there was a much bigger picture the industry was missing. So we contacted key players in the training and crew sectors to join the debate, and Issue 65 includes what they had to say.
We step aboard 72m motoryacht Titania and interview Chief Stewardess Zyanya Sebastian. Having climbed the ranks at a young age for the industry, Sebastian speaks to us about the barriers to crew career progression that exist in the industry and how these are avoided on board Titania.
With a recent fatality of a crewmember in Antibes being unfortunately attributed by some to alcohol, the intoxication of crewmembers is a serious matter and one surrounding which many have strong opinions. In this issue two superyacht captains – one who runs a wet boat and one teetotal who runs a dry boat – enter into a dialogue on the subject of alcohol on board.
More features are packed into this special boat show issue: Captain Christoph Schaefer expounds his theory of crew rotation for all levels, with the figures to prove it; Laurence Lewis of YPI Crew is the subject of our Future Forecast and looks at the world of crew recruitment; an interview with Captain Charles Pritchard of motoryacht Go examines why the management and recruitment sectors should be given a break; the latest gas turbine technology is examined alongside the lack of type-specific training for engineers; and we assess whether the multitude of crew events in the industry should be taking on different agendas in order to better benefit crew and the wider industry.
Issue 65 of The Crew Report will be on its way to superyacht crew all around the world this week. To view or download a copy of issue 65 online please click here.
