Another boost for connectivity in Caribbean

In the wake of Antigua’s investment in broadband for islanders and superyachts, comes a new service from MTN Satellite Communications for yachts cruising the Caribbean.
Under a long-term agreement with satellite service provider, Intelsat, MTN will leverage the first Intelsat EpicNG satellite, Intelsat 29e, to provide more than two gigabits of capacity for MTN’s superyacht clients.
Although not immediately available – Epic launches in 2015 – MTN already has plans to use the Intelsat high performance open architecture satellite platform in the nearer term.
“Over the next few months, MTN will roll out the strategy around the Intelsat relationship and the transition to our next-generation architecture leading up to the launch of Epic in 2015,” said Derik Wagner, managing director of MTN Yacht Services. “Importantly, we expect our customers to start realising benefits from the solutions and services we will deliver using this next-generation architecture in early 2013.”

MTN also hinted that more solutions would follow, with MTN president and CEO Errol Olivier, stating that, “this is the first of a series of strategic initiatives that will include much more than just satellite bandwidth.”
The Intelsat EpicNG platform will be applied to MTN’s High-Throughput Multi-Spot (HTMS) Ku-band solution for the Caribbean. It is billed as a 'game-changing infrastructure.'
“The innovative Intelsat EpicNG platform will give us unprecedented control, allowing us to customise every aspect of the service. The resulting design will provide unmatched throughput and reliability, while maintaining backwards compatibility with the rest of our global Ku-band network. Our cruise and yacht customers will be able to seamlessly roam into our high-throughput beams with their existing Ku antennas,” said Kevin McCarthy, MTN’s senior vice president of network engineering.
