Portland repositions itself as sea trial base

As the Olympic Games finally get underway, and after seven years of infrastructural investment around the country, the harbour that will play host to the sailing events is ready to receive onlooking superyacht owners and their vessels.
Portland Harbour, along with neighbouring Weymouth was the subject of a £250 million investment to improve its facilities for the Games and beyond. As a result, and in addition to berthing for vessels up to 300m, the harbour now offers a ‘first class’ service for secure bonded stores, 24 hour security and CCTV, bunkering, skilled marine engineers, coded aluminium and steel welders, electricians and machinists, joiners and carpenters, fibreglass and hydraulic repairs, high pressure washing and diving Wspecialists, shoreside power and fresh water. With easy access to the shipping lanes of the English Channel Portland, says its operator, is an ideal option for shipyards that wish to undertake superyacht sea trials.

The harbour has recently had a ‘dry’ run in what is required to accommodate a top of the range superyacht, with the arrival of the 87m Lürssen build, Ace. “The owners, representatives and the captain of Ace were looking for a discreet, secure port for provisioning, final preparations and hand over to the new owner before her onward journey. We provided all the facilities needed and Ace left on time with everything in place”, said commercial sales manager for the port, Amanda-Jane Milner. “The benefit for owners and their guest’s means they can leave their yacht at Portland Harbour and take a helicopter transfer directly into the heart of London”, she added.

As yet there are no confirmed bookings for the period when the Olympic sailing events will take place but Portland is optimistic that there will be some last minute takers. And anyway, the primary aim staff insist, is to market Portland Harbour as a base for superyachts undertaking sea trials in the future.
