Gurit amalgamates departments into 'Engineered Structures'

Gurit, the parent company of composites expert SP-High Modulus, has announced the amalgamation of its Marine and Technology, prototyping and business development departments, under the banner of ‘Engineered Structures’.
The newly formed business unit’s general manager, Graham Harvey, explained the rationale behind the move: “With all of our engineering expertise combined under one roof, we can now provide powerful consultancy services for your engineering needs today while we’re also working to develop the next generation of composite markets.”
Although Gurit services a wide variety of sectors, its New Zealand-based marine team has been active in the superyacht market recently. It designed a Warwick 95 fixed-keel cruising yacht, which was built at Alia Yachts in Turkey. The NZ team also designed the structures for "Q5 – Quintessential". The 30m sailing catamaran was built at Yachting Developments in New Zealand using e-glass and carbon fibre reinforcement over a foam core. The need to reduce weight was paramount, an issue that prompted design engineers to employ Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in the design. The European team is currently conducting global FEA studies supporting Dykstra & Partners on Dream Symphony, a 141m wooden sailing yacht under construction at Dream Ship Victory in Turkey, and due for launch as the world’s largest sailing yacht in 2014.
