In December 2011 SuperyachtNews.com attended the launch of TheYachtAuction.com, and the online company has now confirmed that it is on target for 20 entries for the first auction, which will be held on 22 February. With 16 entries to date TheYachtAuction.com was extremely positive about its success over the past two months. “We are getting the message out there,” said Director Andy McDougall.
At the launch, there were predictions of resistance to the online auction process from brokers.
SuperyachtNews.com spoke to broker and fellow Director James Fordham about broker response. “The real surprise has been the great response from fellow brokers in the industry who do not see this as a threat to them, but see TheYachtAuction.com as another platform to assist their ‘struggling’ clients and to produce actual sales quicker than the traditional methods of brokerage,” commented Fordham. “We are also currently experiencing serious interest in placing larger yachts into the auction,” he continued.
The largest yacht listed is a 1975 34m Camper & Nicholsons' motoryacht, with a starting bid of £875,000 and a guide price of £2,695,000.
With less than three weeks to go until the first auction, curiosity is arising as to its predicted success. “Everyone is of course excited and intrigued to what the results may be from the first auction, but if anything will determine one of the reasons behind TheYachtAuction.com, it is to find the best market value of a yacht today," said Fordham. "There are currently around 50,000 yachts for sale in Europe today with asking prices so different from one to the next. TheYachtAuction.com has been developed and designed for the serious buyers and serious sellers in the industry today.
“We strongly believe in the many advantages of the online yacht auction, and by planning four auctions throughout the year we have provided both yacht brokers and yacht owners with the opportunity to plan and prepare for the auction when they are ready to include and sell their yachts,” he continued.
“To say we are excited is an under-statement,” concluded McDougall.
