Baglietto's Varazze facility could be sold

According to reports in the Italian media, Baglietto is close to securing the sale of its two facilities, in La Spezia and Varazze. The former is to be purchased by the Gavio Group, an umbrella organisation owned by Marcellino Gavio, whilst the latter looks set to be acquired by the Azimut-Benetti Group, although it faces competition from Monaco Marine.
In the case of the Varazze facility, it appears time is of the essence in the hunt to secure a buyer for the shipyard, as administrators have set an imminent deadline of 7 January, after which the yard will be closed and its workers faced with redundancy.
With a satisfactory conclusion of primary importance to all parties concerned, a meeting has been called between the yard’s administrators, Azimut-Benetti CEO, Paolo Vitelli and the Commissioner for Economic Development for the Liguria region, Renzo Guccinelli in an attempt to facilitate the necessary deal. However, at the time of writing, it was unclear whether a deal had been agreed.
Speaking to Liguria Nautica, Alberto Lazzari of the Italian General Confederation of Labour, the country’s most influential trade union of which many of Varazze’s workers are members, said that a number of concessions on the part both sides were necessary in order to secure the much-needed deal. Lazzari implored those involved to reach an agreeable resolution as soon as possible.
